The international competition
In 2011, an international architecture and urban development competition was won by the Hamburg-based architectural firm gmp Architekten (von Gerkan, Marg and Partner), in a temporary consortium with other Italian architectural studios. Gmp designed the new masterplan of the area, starting the progressive path to restoration and redevelopment work of the facilities, in the name of sustainability, reduced land consumption, respecting and enhancing the historical identity and the reopening of the area to the city.
